What is LifeTally?

LifeTally turns a single birth date into a running tally of everything your body has quietly done in the background while you were busy living: every heartbeat, every breath, every blink, every meal, every glass of water. Most age calculators stop at "you are 31 years, 4 months old." We think that undersells things — by the time you're 30, your heart alone has beaten well over a billion times.

The idea isn't scientific precision. It's perspective — the same reason people like knowing how far they've walked in a year, or how many words are in a novel they've read. Big, ordinary numbers, made visible.

How the numbers are calculated

Everything starts with one exact figure: the number of seconds between your birth date (and time, if you give it) and this exact moment. From there, each statistic is estimated using commonly cited population averages, applied per day and multiplied across your lifetime:

  • Heartbeats — based on an average resting heart rate of 70 beats per minute.
  • Breaths — based on an average adult breathing rate of 16 breaths per minute.
  • Blinks — based on roughly 17 blinks per minute during ~16 waking hours a day.
  • Sleep — based on an average of 8 hours of sleep per day.
  • Food eaten — based on an average intake of roughly 1.8kg of food per day.
  • Water & fluids drunk — based on an average of roughly 2.5 litres of total fluid per day.
  • Bathroom time — based on published averages for urination (~21 seconds per trip, ~7 trips a day) and defecation (~3 minutes a day).
  • Distance traveled through space — based on Earth's orbital path around the Sun, roughly 940 million kilometres per year.

Every one of these is an average, not a personal measurement — your own numbers will differ based on your health, habits, climate, and biology. Think of LifeTally as a fun, order-of-magnitude mirror, not a medical device.

Why "seconds alive" numbers feel so satisfying

There's a specific pleasure in converting an abstract idea — being 27, being 40 — into something concrete and almost absurdly large. A billion heartbeats is a strange thing to actually picture, and that's exactly the point. Round-number birthdays get all the attention; the 10,000th day of your life, or the moment you pass a billion heartbeats, tend to slide by completely unnoticed. LifeTally exists mostly to catch a few of those.

Frequently asked questions

How is the "time alive" number calculated?

We take the exact difference between your birth date (and time, if you provide it) and the current moment, measured in milliseconds, then convert that into years, days, hours, minutes, and seconds.

Are the heartbeat, breath, and blink numbers medically accurate?

No — they're rough estimates based on commonly cited population averages. Your personal numbers will vary based on fitness, health, and activity level. This tool is meant for fun and perspective, not medical measurement.

Is my birth date stored or shared anywhere?

No. All calculations happen directly in your browser using JavaScript. Your birth date is never sent to a server, stored in a database, or shared with anyone. See the Privacy Policy below, including how third-party ads on this site use cookies.

What if I don't know my exact birth time?

That's fine — leave the time field blank and we'll assume midday, which keeps every number accurate to within about 12 hours over an entire lifetime.
